CHP.net "Cornhole for the Troops" project. (UPDATED-PICTURE)

Postby Milky on Mon Jun 08, 2009 5:36 pm

Hello everybody. A few of us had been talking in a different topic about sending a set of boards and bags over to our fighting men and women in Iraq/Afghanistan. I did some research, and here's what I found:

I contacted a bunch of organizations, including the U.S.O., and I got a phone call back today from a group called Soldiers Angels. They specialize in getting things like care packages and odd, but needed items, to our troops overseas.

The Soldiers Angels rep told me that if we can get the set shipped to either their warehouse in Newbury Park, Ca, or Ramseur, NC, they will cover the cost of shipping it over to our forces in Iraq. They will include it along with one of their cargo planes or cargo ships that goes over there just about every week. He said "Thank you for wanting to help, and please let me know if there is anything else we can do to help you and the group you represent make this happen." How cool, right?

I am volunteering to buy the material and build the set of boards myself. I'd like to see if we can get volunteers from this site to take care of the rest. We can come up with a design, make it, and ship it to North Carolina, and they will cover the overseas shipping costs, so it should be fairly easy. I calculated the shipping from Philly to NC, and it's only like $50, maximum.

So, the point is: We are looking for volunteers. People have already stepped up to the challenge. We will need the following:

--Set of boards (Being built and donated by Milky)
--A set of vinyl decals to match the design we choose. (Being made and donated by billm75)
--At least one set of bags. (One set being donated by Jbone)
--$50 to cover the shipping charges. (Several members have already pledged to donate to this cause! See posts below!)
--A nice letter from us, telling our troops how much we appreciate what they're doing over there, and explaining our "mission".

We're hoping that you are all as exciting about this opportunity as we are. This is our chance, as a community, to give something back. Well, what do you think, guys?

P.S.--Just in case you guys were wondering, yes, they do play cornhole in Iraq.

I got the decals covered. Let's come up with a design and see where it takes us from there.

Jbone, that's awesome! Also, thanks to the rest of you out there. Jbone, I'd say red and blue bags would be great, right? I'll PM you with my address and we'll get it started.

To the rest of you, I have some exciting news! The owner of http://www.icornhole.com got wind of what we are trying to do here. He has offered to ship a set of one colored boards, and a set of bags, at a cost to us of $110, total (shipped)! So, what that means is that, once we get this custom set done, we can move on and get some more sets shipped out to our troops, thanks to http://www.icornhole.com. OR, what this means, is that we can forget about the custom set, and focus on raising enough money to get two sets shipped overseas asap. This is completely up to you guys. Let's talk about it as a group, and figure it out. Put it this way, if we can get just 22 forum members to give just $10 each, that means that we can ship two complete sets of bags and boards overseas to our fighting men and women. Let me know what you think about this, ok everybody? Thanks.

Milky

P.S.--As far as the funds go, the plan is to ask you folks to send the money to me, via Paypal, and I will keep track of it and make the payments to icornhole.com. I would hope by noe that you folks would know the type of person I am, and that I am certainly not going through all of this to scam you guys for $10 each!

P.S.S.-- I plan on donating $10 from every second set I sell from here on out to this cause. Heck, if I can send a set overseas every other month, that'll just make me so damn happy!

It was just pointed out to me that I didn't give my email for the Paypal funding. You can send the money to:

mmiehlke@comcast.net

PLEASE be sure to put "Cornhole For The Troops" in the message box. That way I can keep track of everything, and keep those funds seperate. Thanks guys and gals! This is gonna rock when it actually happens!

Milky,

This is a great thing and thanks for bringing it up. I'll send ya some money after this weekend. Anything to make the troops feel a little closer to home. I remember when I was in Afghanistan we set up christmas lights. Didn't run any power to them but had them up just as a reminder of home. In Iraq we did have the luxuries of buying a PS2 and a 20 inch tv. We had plenty of college and pro football tournaments back then with as many as 40 guys playing. It was a blast to get away from the daily grind that is war. Thanks again for helping these men/women out.

Thanks, guys, and an especially big thanks to you, Dan.

Billm75 and I are currently working on the decals design. He has a sweet design of some flaming eagles, and the letters "USA" underneath. Does anyone else have an input/ideas for the decals?

Above all, I want to stress that this is a community effort. This isn't a "Milky" thing, this is a "CHP.NET" thing. I'm just helping to organize it, that's all. Even if we can only afford to give $5 each, that $5 will help ship a set or two over to our troops, and make you feel good in the process. I'm so glad to see all the positive response to this. Thank ytou all!

Thanks, J! That's awesome. I don't think there's much else. I'm just hoping people don't forget about it. I'm not in a huge hurry to get this done, but the sooner the better. Let's get those donations in, team! Let's make this happen! Woohoo!
